Abstract

Innovations in the content of primary mathematics education being introduced in the draft of the new curriculum anticipate the use of certain concepts of set theory as the foundation for teaching mathematics. Studies have shown that the concept of a natural number is formed in young schoolchildren on the basis of operations on sets of objects: sets of sticks, cubes, etc. The properties of the actions of addition and subtraction are mastered by the students on the basis of direct actions on sets of objects and observations on corresponding properties of operations on sets. In view of this, it is useful to approach problems of method in primary mathematics education by considering certain concepts of set theory.
