Abstract

Near Maarmorilik in West Greenland, several sphalerite-pyrite-galena deposits outcrop in cliffs high above the fjords. One, the Black Angel (Sorte Engel) deposit, has been mined since 1973. Shoreline geochemical prospecting, using seaweed and slope sediments proved to be an easy and rapid way of detecting such deposits. Anomalous zinc and lead responses, using cold-extraction dithizone field analysis and emission spectrography, were obtained below the known deposits. Elsewhere we found no strong anomalies, suggesting that no other important lead-zinc deposits outcrop in this area.
