Abstract

Purpose: Adolescents, in particular female adolescents, are susceptible to iron deficiency anemia due to their rapid growth, a diet low in iron, and menses in females. Screening for iron deficiency anemia is commonly performed BY obtaining a CBC, but early iron deficiency may be missed. Recent studies evaluating reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) have found this new hematologic parameter, easily obtained with a reticulocyte count, to be the strongest predictor of iron deficiency in young children when compared to other biochemical testing. This study evaluates whether using CHr in addition to the screening CBC improves the ability to diagnose iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in adolescents.
