Abstract

Based upon self-reports, prevalence of nutritional supplement usage by 236 residents of a retirement community was 53%, with 91% of supplement users taking them daily and 61% for more than five years. The most common supplements were multivitamins, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, vitamin B complex, vitamin E, and iron. Tiredness was the most frequent reason given for use. The use of nutritional supplements by the elderly should be assessed as part of their medical and nutritional care.
