Abstract

1. To analyze the operation of a dam on an anisotropic stratified ledge-rock foundation, we mustestablish the deformation characteristics of the foundation in various directions. 2. In work with models, the static deformation modulus of a fissured ledge-rock massif can be established on the basis of the dynamic modulus of elasticity, which much facilitates determination of the deformation characteristics of the model foundation in various directions. 3. Analysis of the deformation characteristics in various directions in a model of anisotropic ledge-rock foundation split by a system of parallel stratification fractures has established that such a foundation can be regarded as a continuous orthotropic elastic medium. 4. In estimating the stress state in a dam on a stratified anisotropic ledge-rock foundation, we must take account of the fact that the normal stress distribution in the dam contact zone depends on the pliability of the foundation in the directions of the loads applied to the structure and of their resultant, and also on its pliability in the direction of action of the given stress. 5. In further research on the justification of the systems of calculation to be adopted, it would be useful to acquire data characterizing the relation between the stresses in the dam and the deformation properties of the foundation for other systems of fissuration and other contact conditions in the fissures.
