Abstract

In France, as in many other European countries, there have been recent reports of an increase in mental health problems among the homeless population, particularly in the city of Paris. This has been attributed to the deinstitutionalization process and a general shortage of low-priced accommodation. We here describe an epidemiological study of a representative sample of homeless people in Paris, a study designed to address the lack of data on prevalence of mental illness and attendant concerns about the adequacy of the present mental health system.
