Abstract

A method foe synchronizing a remote clock with transmissions from a loran station is discussed. The method is essentially a programming technique and permits improved position-fixing accuracies by the use of a range-range mode of navigation. The times of arrival of pulses from three stations are measured at the observed position and the time of transmission is estimated. Two pairs of estimated ranges are used to compute the user's position. The estimated time of transmission is varied until the two calculated positions coincide; consequently, the clock is synchronized with the loran chain. The effect of receiver instrument error on the accuracy of computing the time of transmission and the effect of propagation anomalies on different types of position fixes are discussed.
