Abstract
This chapter looks in detail at the major effect juvenile wood has on the yield and qualities of both solid wood and fiber products. Figure 8.1 shows the large strength differences between juvenile and mature wood, which are more dramatic than differences in specific gravities. Juvenile wood is of importance in industry (Smith 1962), and as Polge (1964) pointed out, an important future need in forestry is to solve problems related to the use of juvenile wood.
