Abstract

Background: Preoperative diagnosis of gallbladder cancer (GBC) remains a challenge. Unwarranted extensive surgery for benign disease is associated with increased morbidity and hospital stay; whereas undertreatment for GBC may lead to need for additional revision surgery, prolongation of treatment and delay in initiation of systemic therapy. We aimed to evaluate the routine use of intraoperative frozen section for primary histological diagnosis of suspected gallbladder malignancy and its impact on surgical strategy.
