Abstract

The Indian National Satellite, INSAT-I, is a multi-purpose geostationary satellite providing meteorological, telecommunication and broadcast services. This paper describes the ground segment of the meteorological component of the INSAT system. The processing of INSAT data at the Meteorological Data Utilisation Centre, New Delhi is explained in detail. The complexities of satellite image processing and the recording and collection of observations by unmanned meteorological platforms are described. The paper describes how the communications capabilities of INSAT are being exploited for transmission of disaster warnings to coastal areas under the threat of tropical cyclones, and for dissemination of meteorological data to the various forecasting centres of the India Meteorological Department.
