Abstract

It is now feasible to isolate female gametes of flowering plants and to fertilize them in vitro. In vitro produced zygotes, as well as zygotes isolated after in vivo fertilization, can now be regenerated into fertile plants. These advances are enabling the design of new experiments for further study of double fertilization and to facilitate crop improvement.
