Abstract

Allergen immunotherapy is an effective modality for patients with allergic rhinitis, extrinsic asthma, and stinging and biting insect hypersensitivity. An effective dosage of allergen is necessary to achieve the desired reduction of symptoms, but it is essential to balance the risk of anaphylaxis with the need to relieve symptoms. Not all patients should receive allergen immunotherapy, but excessive negativism is not justified considering the beneficial clinical results that occur. The costs of allergen immunotherapy for asthma and allergic rhinitis are obvious. The savings stem from the reduction of symptoms, greater productive hours in school and at work, and the avoidance of costly medications and electric bills for air conditioning.
