Abstract

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is now recognized as a disease of multiple phenotypes, of which chronic pain or pain sensitization has been identified. Among the studies that have assessed pain phenotypes, significant heterogeneity exists in the variables used, with few including a range of variables representative of the multidimensional nature of pain. Phenotyping of OA has been recognized as a research priority that can increase efficiencies in prognosis and provide tailored management. In 2016, the Initiative on Methods, Measurement and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials (IMMPACT) published recommendations for phenotyping including variables and their measures.
