Abstract

To investigate the changes in the state of stress in coal seams in the zone of influence of mine workings, the Rock Burst Laboratory of the A. A. Skochinskii Institute of Mining has developed a method for measuring stress by means of hydraulic gauges [3]. This method has been used by fine Institute for a number of years to study the stat~ of stress of burst-prone coals seams in fine Donbass [4, 5] and has recently been used extensively to investigate rock pressure manifestations in coals seams in the Kuzbass, both by the Eastern Scientific-Resea rch Institute (VostNII) [6] and the Institute of Mining of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR [7]. Observations performed by the Rock Burst Laboratory at different times in four gently sloping seams and seven steep seams in the Central and Donetsk-Makeevka regions of the Donbass revealed that the parameters of the abutment pressure zone in coal seams ahead of the working faces of mining-out workings may vary over a wide range.
