Abstract

Historical methods have been used to gain information about the development of social welfare institutions and policies, social work practice, and human behavior. Yet, researchers have been less interested in the process of historical research. Two ideal types of historical methods are presented, including their characteristics and how their application in social work research can illuminate the effect of past events and behavior on current practice and policies.
