Abstract

This paper discusses the advantages of using higher level Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) in linear equation solvers. On workstations with cache memory, the execution time to solve a system of linear equations can be reduced by as much as 90% (10-fold speedup) by using Level 3 BLAS. The frontal elimination code developed at M.I.T. [1]is modified to exploit Level 3 BLAS. The enhanced frontal solver runs at around 550 Mflops on a single processor of a Cray C90, and about 3–4 times slower on a 195-MHz SGI Power Challenge.
