Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate factors contributing to under-use of health facilities for deliveries by pregnant women. A sample of 62 respondents was selected using systematic sampling procedures. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview schedule. In addition, two focus group discussions were held with 20 participants who did not participate in the interviews. The findings found that a proportion of pregnant women are delivering at home with the assistance of unskilled attendants. The results also revealed that lack of knowledge about risks of home deliveries, distance to the health facilities, lack of transport, unaffordable fees, poor staff attitude and socio-cultural practices were some of the factors that hindered mothers from utilizing the health institutions for deliveries.
