Abstract

1. Fundamental information is given on the nature of the vitreous state, properties of glass, and on the processes of the interaction of metals with molten glass. Ways are shown for controlling the process of wetting of metals by molten glass and the possibility of using glass in powder metallurgy are determined. 2. Information is given on molten glass as a protective medium when heating compact metals and dense cermet materials. It is shown that the use of molten glass as a protective medium makes it possible to produce parts with properties which are usually achieved by heating in a vacuum. Other technical and economic advantages of the new protective medium are given. 3. Information is given on the development of metal-glass materials and it is shown that these materials have comparatively high mechanical and corrosion properties.
