Abstract

A breeding method is described for simultaneous conversion and improvement of alien sorghums (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench). In addition to recessive height and maturity genes the procedure requires genetic male sterility. This integrated and pragmatic approach for population breeding seeks the development of widely adapted cold tolerant sorghum cultivars, while converting the alien lines to short stature and early maturity types by recurrent backcrossing. However, the procedure can be used, with necessary modifications, for the improvement of other traits in sorghum and also in other crops where suitable systems exist for easy recombination.
