Abstract

AbstractMicroorganisms have been widely used to produce additive compounds for many applications in the food, agricultural, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Recent advances in protein engineering, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology have transformed our ability to discover and build new biosynthetic and biological platforms or so-called microbial factories to produce commercially relevant products containing a variety of substances such as alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and polyketides, ribosomal peptides, biofuels, and chemicals that can be scalable in an industrial level. This chapter will highlight a few independent examples and case studies on the perspectives and recent advancement in the field of engineered bacteria for the synthesis of green chemicals and pharmaceuticals.KeywordsMicroorganismSynthetic biologyPolysaccharidesGreen chemicalsPharmaceutical
