Abstract

The proposed HES-PSS scheme (see Fig. 2) with an excess of the head of the turbine regime Ht over its value during filling Hf provides the following advantages: 1. There are broader possibilities of using pumped storage in flatland regions of the country with a large unit capacity of the reversible sets and increase of the economic potential of hydropower resources of rivers, including with the multipurpose use of the stream-flow. 2. The depth of the pump-turbine sets and powerhouse is reduced. 3. Depending on how much Hf is less than Ht, the optima of the efficiency of both storing regimes can be made close to one another or matched and its overall efficiency can be increased; a more complete characterization of the proposed scheme can be obtained after performing design studies and laboratory investigations of models of the unit blocks of the HES-PSS IH.
