Abstract

The chain code histogram method was used to provide a shape index to characterize airborne particles. A total of 136 airborne particles were analyzed using this method. The results showed that the chain code histogram method is an easy and quick way to quantify airborne particle shapes. Furthermore, this technique has the potential to be incorporated into the on-line Computer-Controlled Scanning Electron Microscope (CCSEM) analysis software such that a simple shape index can be determined in automatic fashion along with the particle size, elemental chemistry and image.
