Abstract

Maleic anhydride was chemically attached to depolymerized natural rubber by a photochemical reaction. The product is named as Carboxy Terminated liquid Natural Rubber (CTNR). This paper describes the use of CTNR as a reactive polymeric plasticizer for chloroprene (CR) vulcanizates, which can improve the tensile properties and ageing resistance of the chloroprene vulcanizates, due to similarity in polarities. The efficiency and permanence of this polymeric plasticizer were compared with that of conventional plasticizer in silica and carbon black filled CR vulcanizates. It is found that CTNR could replace the conventional plasticizer either partially or fully. A combination of the conventional plasticizer and CTNR could improve the ageing and oil resistance of the chloroprene vulcanizates.
