Abstract
Both borax and sodium nitrite provided excellent protection of red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) stumps against Fomes annosus (Fr.) Karst. in an Ontario thinning operation. The contention that sodium nitrite, which in the past failed to provide complete protection under some experimental conditions, would prove to be effective in operational use was validated. Since both chemicals provide protection, selection of a protectant for operational use is based on considerations other than effectiveness alone.
