Abstract

The application of both acid and alkali fusion reactions to condensation polymers that exhibit considerable hydrolysis resistance and to some simpler organic compounds is discussed. The particular problems of the analysis of polymer systems include the difficulty of obtaining pure reference materials for calibration, the limited chemical purity and variability of the chemical composition and isomer content of many tonnage organic intermediates and the molecular weight distribution of polymeric intermediates. These features and the effect of multiple extraction steps on quantitation are reviewed.
