Abstract

Partial or total nail plate avulsion is the first step of most nail surgery procedures, such as matrix biopsy, subungual tumor excision, or onychocryptosis treatment. Specific nail plate elevators or periosteal (Freer) elevators are best used to slide under the plate and lift it from the nail bed. However, these materials are often unavailable in standard dermatologic surgery kits. Other instruments, such as opened mosquito forceps or blunt-tipped scissors, can also be used, but they can damage the nail bed or matrix.
