Abstract

Abstract A portable organic vapor analyzer was evaluated and subsequently used to locate pockets of volatile organics underground. Methods for laying out sampling grinds in the field are described, and the sensitivity of two different analyzers to various volatile organics are compared. Field data are discussed and methods of verifying the analytical results (for example, digging backhoe pits in “clean” and “contaminated” areas) are described. Precautions to be taken when using this type of instrument in the field also are discussed.
