Abstract
Abstract The application of an apparatus with multiple diffusion chamber (EcoloGen) to studies of the Florida red tide is indicated. The unit consists of four growth chambers mounted radially to a central reservoir and separated from the central chamber by means of membrane filters (pore size 0.5 μ). A mixed culture system using three types of plankton indicated symbiotic-antibiotic effects. Ectocrine interrelationships were further examined using multiple diffusion chambers, and it was found that the metabolic products of a ciliate stimulated growth of colonial blue-green alga, G. aponina.
