Abstract

Swelling of the distal foreand hind limbs in horses is associated with a variety of infectious and idiopathic conditions. Infectious conditions include sporadic lymphangitis, 1,11:2 ulcerative lymphangitis, 6 and cellulitis associated with subcutaneous bacterial infection. The conditions may spread rapidly along tissue planes, causing devitalization of tissue and skin necrosis: Control of limb swelling is thought to be an important consideration in treatment of these conditions. This report describes the use of a linear compression pump to control distal hind limb edema in 2 horses, and 1 failure due to the horse's refusal to tolerate the device.
