Abstract

This chapter will provide professionals with a framework for using instructional high leverage practices described in the previous chapters (e.g., systematic instruction) in intentional small group learning arrangements for students with extensive support needs. These instructional arrangements maximize the learning and communication/social opportunities for all students. By using intentional flexible (i.e., heterogeneous) small group arrangements, professionals can group students based on individual interests, learning styles, communication/social skills, and varying performance levels. The instructional arrangements may be more efficient for some students as opportunities for observational learning can be created for additional instructional models and exposure to non-targeted skills and information. The authors will provide strategies for optimizing learning and communication opportunities in intentional small group arrangements.
