Abstract
The utilization and performance of various foundation seepage reduction measures from over 100 dams situated on pervious soils throughout the world has been reviewed. Summary discussions of the utilization of slurry trench cutoffs, concrete diaphragm walls, upstream impervious blankets and grout curtains are presented. Also presented is a compilation of acceptable and unacceptable seepage quantities beneath dams, situated on previous soil foundations, as represented in the literature. A criterion for permissible seepage emerges that is of value for preliminary design and in safety evaluation of embankment dams.
