Abstract

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a non-invasive imaging modality used in the evaluation of musculoskeletal injury. It has provided a specific advantage in the athletic population given the numerous soft-tissue injuries which are encountered. The work-up of the injured athlete, however, must include a careful history, complete physical examination and appropriate use of plain radiographs. The MRI should be used as an adjunct and not as a substitute for thorough clinical evaluation. The future management of sport-related musculoskeletal injury will undoubtedly be shaped by MRI and its related technologies.
