Abstract

This chapter summarizes the common cognitive effects of the antiepileptic agents used in neuropsychiatry. The cognitive side effects are likely to compromise the patient’s quality of life. The newer antiepileptic drugs appear to be safer in terms of minimal cognitive or other side effects. The risk factors for development of cognitive effects and the management of such cognitive effects due to antiepileptic drugs are discussed. It is also suggested that good seizure control is the best means to maintain cognitive integrity.
