Abstract

This article announces that the US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC) have entered into a cooperative research agreement to test three water desalination pilot projects at USBR's Water Quality Improvement Center in Yuma, Ariz. One project will test replacing microfiltration pretreatment with a reverse osmosis (RO) pretreatment using ozone and biofiltration processes. A second project will study the performance of large‐diameter (18 in. [450 mm]) RO membranes, which are among the largest currently available. A third project calls for a new concentrate recovery technology to be fed by the reject stream of a large‐diameter RO unit. The research goals of each project are briefly mentioned.
