Abstract
A spending deal approved by the US Congress last month is good news for science and technology funding overall, with select agencies and programs receiving a roughly 6% increase in funding, according to an analysis by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The funding agreement resolves a months-long logjam for fiscal 2020. The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1, 2019, to Sept. 30, 2020. President Donald J. Trump signed the appropriations bills Dec. 20, 2019, before stopgap federal spending legislation expired. Trump had proposed major cuts to science programs in his March 2019 budget proposal, including 12% from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and 31% from the Environmental Protection Agency.
