Abstract

American presidential science advisers usually operate in the bureaucratic shadows. Serving as the bridges between the administration and the scientific community, they develop options for political issues that involve science and technology – normally beyond the publicity machine that illuminates much of political Washington. But this year, President George W Bush's science adviser, John Marburger, has found himself in an unwelcome spotlight.
