Abstract
The worst fears of the US physical sciences community were confirmed last month when President Bush's budget request for financial year 2002, which starts in October, included large increases for biomedical and military R&D, and cuts to the rest of the budget. With inflation running at 3.4% in the US, even those areas of physics and astronomy that have been earmarked to remain at or near 2001 levels will suffer.
