Abstract
A two‐year study of Hawaiian volcanoes, conducted as a joint project by geophysicists from the US Geological Survey and scientists from Japan, was launched in April in order to learn more about the underground sources and flow of lava, to clarify differences between mid‐Pacific and Japanese volcanoes, and to compare the instruments, techniques, and results of Japanese and American scientists working together on an identical project. The US portion of the research is supported by a National Science Foundation grant and conducted under the direction of geophysicist Jerry Eaton of the Geological Survey. The study includes six months of observation at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, followed by eighteen months of data evaluation. Subsequently, there will be a study of Japanese volcanoes to be planned in detail at the completion of the Hawaiian project.
