Abstract

This chapter builds on the discussions of the previous chapters and argues that Islam was securitized by the Bush administration so that they can justify the “crusade” for democracy promotion in the Middle East, the war on terror, and the invasion of Iraq. It compares US policy of democracy promotion in the Balkans—namely, Bosnia and Kosovo during the Clinton administration—and Middle East, during the Bush administration. Both of the regions where the US intervened had a Muslim majority, and democracy promotion was a policy in both cases. Yet, they had opposite results, and how the USA viewed Islam played an important role in having two opposite results.
