Abstract

A 17 years old male lion named Viral belonging to Vasona Lion Safari in Vasona, Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli was reported to be anorectic, unthrifty with hind limb weakness/paralysis for a week resulting in recumbency. Limited haemato-biochemical study revealed neutropenia with relative lymphocytosis, higher level of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. Necropsy revealed the presence of one urolith each (15×5mm) in the pelvis of both kidneys. Histopathological changes were characterized by glomerulonephritis, interstitial and pyelonepthritis. Additional findings included congestion of cardiac muscle, centrilobular necrosis in liver, congestion and presence of heart failure cells in lungs. The suggestive cause of death was uremia/renal failure due to urolithiasis.
