Abstract

A national survey of 62 intensive care units for newborns showed that disposable diapers and cotton balls on plastic wrap are frequently used to collect urine. This study evaluates the reliability of these two methods. Urine volume, specific gravity, and glucose were measured in urine aspirated from disposable diapers, cotton balls, and controls standing together for 1, 30, 60 and 120 minutes. Twenty-one trials were performed at room temperatures and 20 with the addition of a radiant warmer. Volume and specific gravity changes were greatest with the passage of time and especially so where a radiant warmer was used. Disposable diapers and cotton balls are reliable for volume, specific gravity, and glucose determinations in 15 minutes or less after voiding.
