Abstract

This chapter covers presentation, diagnosis and management of urinary tract infections, prostatitis, genital ulceration and syphilis. Urinary symptoms and infections are common presentations in refugee or forced migrant settings; contributors may include dehydration, insufficient water and toilet facilities. Overuse of antibiotics, poor antibiotic stewardship and taking incomplete courses of antibiotics contribute to the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Asymptomatic bacturia occurs in all population but not all require treatment. Identify patient-specific strategies to avoid indwelling catheters. Consider infectious and non-infectious causes of genital ulceration. Syphilis is a ‘great imitator’ but can also be asymptomatic; consider it in patients at risk.
