Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence and intensity of Urinary Schistosomiasis in four villages within the Goronyo Dam project Area. A total of 500 urine were examined for the eggs of Schistosoma haematobium using the standard filtration technique. The overall prevalence was 52%. The prevalence rate varies with age reaching the peak among the age group 10-19 (80.0%) and decreasing steadily thereafter. Males, with a prevalence of 64.7%, were significantly more infected than the females with a prevalence of 37.6%. The mean egg count for the whole study area was 91.7eggs/10ml. Males had comparatively high egg mean count (94.5eggs/10ml) than females (86.3eggs/10ml). The age-specific prevalence showed that age group 10-19 recorded the highest egg mean count (105.9 egg/10ml). The study showed that irrigation activities in the area are contributing o he transmission of the disease. The Nigerian Journal of Parasitology Vol. 24 2003: 109-114
