Abstract

A gas chromatographic method for the estimation of piperazine is described; the new technique was devised because existing colorimetric methods are not specific for the drug. The method was used to study the urinary excretion of piperazine in healthy caucasian volunteers under standard conditions. A unimodal distribution of 24 hour excretion values, together with poor ‘repeatability’ of values in volunteers who took two separate doses of the drug, indicate that the drug is not handled by a metabolic polymorph. Studies of urinary piperazine excretion are therefore unlikely to yield any useful information for the chemotherapeutic application of the drug.
