Abstract
As an approach to investigation of the relationship between the thyroid and catechol amines, urinary excretion of catechol amines, metanephrines and vanillyl mandelic acid (VMA) was measured in hyperthyroid and hypothyroid patients. Urinary levels of catecholamines in 32 hyperthyroid patients were not significantly different from the values found in euthyroid subjects; in 20 hypothyroid patients the mean value for urinary norepinephrine was slightly higher than in the euthyroid and hyperthyroid groups. Urinary VMA in 32 hyperthyroid and 18 hypothyroid patients was within the range observed in euthyroid subjects. Urinary total metanephrines in 13 hyperthyroid and 10 hypothyroid patients did not differ significantly from the values found in the euthyroid group.
