Abstract

Ureaplasma urealyticum was isolated from midstream urine in 209 of 587 patients (36 per cent) presenting with symptoms of urinary infection in a general practice setting. Suprapubic aspiration of urine in 101 of these patients revealed ureaplasmas in 20 bladder specimens. Ureaplasmas were the only micro-organisms obtained in 7 patients, while they were accompanied by Gardnerella vaginalis or Mycoplasma hominis in 10. Of the 20 patients with ureaplasmas in the bladder specimens 19 (95 per cent) also had pyuria in the bladder aspirate. Further studies are required to assess the role of ureaplasmas in pathological conditions of the urinary tract.
