Abstract

ABSTRACT UREA preserved high-moisture hay for over six weeks by releasing ammonia. Hay of initial moisture con-tent 21 to 28 percent was treated with urea at the rate of 6.5 percent on a dry matter basis by spraying urea solu-tion over windrows. Round bales of hay—urea treated and control (untreated)—were stored in an open shelter for six weeks. Their properties such as physical characteristics, final moisture content, total N, ADF, and ADIN were compared at the end of the storage period. The urea treated hay appeared to be in better condition than the control hay.
