Abstract

The article characterizes the growth of the number of towns and cities in the USSR during the Soveiet period, as well as the increase (from 18 to 56 %) in the proportion of urban population and of its actual numbers. The sources of this increase are reveealed, as are the shifts in the ratio of different-sized urban places. Correlation is shown between hierarchical systems of urban settlement and the territorial organization of industrial production. Restrictivee measures against the excessive growth of supercities are noted.
