Abstract
Urbanization and urban poverty have close linkage as the former creates the latter. The hasty urbanization in Bangladesh over the last 20 years has accelerated the growth of urban poverty in major cities. Therefore, this chapter presents a discussion on the intensity and extent of urbanization in Bangladesh from a historical perspective. While analyzing the situation of urbanization, different issues, including urban situation, urban growth, the proportion of urban population and share of GDP have been given special prominence. Moreover, the issue of urban poverty has been discussed, highlighting the growth and impact of urban poverty on the economy of the country.
