Abstract
Urbanization refers to an increase in the number of people living in urban areas, the worldwide development and spatial expansion of urban ways of life, and the physical growth of individual cities. Physically, urbanization results in a horizontal and vertical growth of built environments. Cities are large, dense, and permanent settlements where people of different cultural and social backgrounds interact. By the end of 2008 half of the world's population lived in settlements designated as cities. Cities are the centers of change, innovation, and creativity. World development is largely urban development these days. As a result of inequality combined with density, environmental problems and natural disasters are often extreme in cities. Anthropology can make visible aspects and dynamics of everyday urban life. Applied urban anthropologists help to develop sensitivity for local environments and to foster participatory development and a more realist and humanized city planning.
